Well as you can see theres two basic styles such as the Marvel (American) and manga (japanese, chinese, asian, ect..) sytle. The main way to differentiate between them is realism (marvel) and cartoony (manga), but don't misunderstand both can be either or.
On the left there is an example of Marvel; symbolized as the well known Superman and on the right Goku, the Japanese counter part. These two characters very famous any very different, why is this important, manly because I want you to pick which one you would like to create.
Now pick a style: Marvel or Manga in the navigation bar on the very right.
Define: Marvel, manga
Marvel an intricate universe of super heroes and villians.
Why heroes?
Well when Marvel comics began it was in the period of WWII with the big hit of "Captain America". Thus this cycle of super heroes.
Recently:
Now marvel has been popular enough to have had movies dedicated to its comics and plots.
Recent Occurrence in Media
- Batman
- X-men
- Fantasic Four
- Spiderman
..and so many more.
|
Recent Financial Occurrences
- Disney buys Marvel for 4 billion dollars.
|
After WWII super heroes began a new turnover and with the war over new thoughts and styles came to be. Then another big hit came out called "The Fantastic Four".
Now go to next step: Proportions (on navigation).
As you can already tell manga much like the derivative of anime or animation look pretty much the same. Japan has been known to be all for the pretty and cute qualities in their toys, cartoons, comics, and even animations. Many fanatics called "Otaku's" have dressed up... must be more prominent in japan.
Don't take this cartoon illustration so lightly because the proportions that have to be taken into play art not as easy as they seem.
Move onto proportions (look at navigation).

Heads |
A normal human is eight to heads tall lined up vertically.
A super hero is eight and a half heads tall or taller depending on his body size. So that you have a feel for my explanation eight and a half and bigger would be the a monster or the Hulk.
|
In both manga and marvel character illustrations there rules of proportion comparing the face to the body apply. Doesn't have to follow the rules exactly but be close to it so that the character looks proportional and right.
In this example the character model is seven heads tall but that's all up to you.. in reality I suppose people are five to six heads tall because individuals are not tall at all. Adding the shapes for the fundamental base helps imagine and improve the overall quality of the drawings making it look as if it had volume, form, and mass. |
This is a sample of something drawn (by me) and it flashes the round basic shapes of this huge man/monster.
|
Marvel head
|
Manga heads
|
The marvel characters head is much more rigid and rough and sturdy because the super heroes have to be pretty tough to take a punch, laugh.
|
The round look of the manga characters give it its easy to draw and elegant. The eyes follow... the eyes have to attract much attention thus having the bigger than average look.
|
Lips & Mouth
This rule follows both manga or marvel style because the lips can only be drawn in one way. You cannot pass the pupils of the eyes on the human character because then it will look deformed unless that's what you are looking for.

Hint: Whenever taking into account the x and y axis or Horizontal (X-axis) and Vertical (Y-axis) planes make sure to create a vanishing point so your shapes, in a case of an environment, will look more real and trick the eyes to follow correctly. There can be more than one vanishing point but keep it real people.
Don't forget to have lines connecting to all of your vanishing points to get the right angle and perspective. |
Comic Panels |
Marver Panels |
Manga Panel |
Reading an American comic requires you to read from left to right opposite of manga. |

Reading an authentic manga requires you to read opposite from the typical American way from right to left. |
Examples |
Note that Marvel style of panels are pretty simple.

Note that Manga panels are simple.

Both comic book styles also have various types of transactions in between if there is action within the comic. The action is symbolized with inverted panel colors and overlapping characters and sound effects.
